Words & Actions

We need words and actions to make the changes that can create peaceful sustainable changes in the world, and both are needed to share the news of what is happening. Actions can be campaigning and lobbying on the big issues or about things that are needed in the community.  Words can communicate ideas, help you stand up for yourself and others and learn, and they can be written or spoken or even sung.

Words and Actions for Peace at 58 Ratcliffe Terrace, Edinburgh EH9 1ST is a gallery, and an exhibition or events venue, which is providing a home for two organisations committed to peace and sustainability, Peace and Justice Scotland, and also Secure Scotland. Both can be contacted there by individuals and groups who share their outlook and need a space to meet or work. Resources offered at Words and Actions for Peace to people or groups include storage and equipment, somewhere warm for individuals and community groups, and a wee bit of peace-related retail. We offer Associate posts to students and graduates, and we welcome interest from volunteers.

contact@wordsandactions.scot is main address to contact us all, or if you want to book in an event or an exhibition. If you’d like to receive alerts about what’s happening, just email with ADD ME in the subject line or scan the QR code below.

EXHIBITION OPENS 28 JULY 6.00 p.m. – 8.00 p.m. ALL WELCOME

The Dawn of The Anthropocene

– Hiroshima 1945 –

28 July – 17 August

Peace & Justice and Secure Scotland jointly present this exhibition of images from the Hiroshima Peace Museum and the International Campaign for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). As partner organisations in ICAN, we work towards the abolition and elimination of all nuclear weapons everywhere through the UN Treaty for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons. The exhibition uses imagery and Japanese text from 1945 to communicate the devastation and appalling cruelty of the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, with the narrative of hope for the future of people and the planet that the 2017 Treaty can offer, and how Scotland can contribute.

STANDING FOR PEACE IN DIFFICULT TIMES
Thursday March 2nd 7.00pm – 8.30pm
A Secure Scotland panel event at Words and Actions for Peace

Just under a year ago, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine, Secure Scotland hosted a small reflective discussion on line, lightly moderated by Secure Scotland Core Group member David Mackenzie under the title “Standing for Peace in Difficult Times”. We tried to share our understanding and consider what steps we might take individually and collectively to better understand and support efforts for building peace rather than waging war.

In consideration of what has happened since, and to follow up on the original conversation, we have invited three panellists to join us in returning to the same theme this time face-to-face at our Edinburgh base. Senator Tom Clonan, a former peacekeeper with the Irish army, Dr Lesley Morrison from Medact Scotland, and Marian Pallister, chair of Pax Christi Scotland will be on a panel, again moderated by David Mackenzie for Secure Scotland. We invite parliamentarians and other decision-makers to attend, and this is not necessarily a call for protest or mass action, but more an effort to share insights and learn. All are welcome and we hope for an interactive occasion.

Light refreshments will be available
